Five policemen were killed and one injured when Maoist rebels blew up a security patrol late on Friday in a landmine blast in Sheohar in Bihar, the state's top police official said.
Neelmani, Bihar's director general of police, said the police had launched an operation to nab the suspected rebels.
Bihar is holding a month-long election to elect its next government. The first phase of the election was held on Thursday and the next phase is scheduled for Sunday.
Bihar accounts for 40 of the 545 seats in the national parliament, the fifth largest parliamentary bloc in India.
